The Region of Epirus is located in the north-western part of Greece and it constitutes one of the 13 regions of the country, including 4 Regional Units: Arta, Thesprotia, Ioannina and Preveza. It borders the regions of Western Macedonia and Thessaly to the east, Western Greece to the south, the Ionian Sea and the Ionian Islands to the west and the country of Albania to the north It covers an area of 9.450 sq. km. and has a total population of 300.000 inhabitants.

The seat of the Region is located in Ioannina. Administratively, the Region of Epirus belongs to the second level of the Greek administrative structure and it is governed by the Regional Governor, Deputy Governors and Regional Council popularly elected every 5 years.

On of the main roles of the Region of Epirus is the planning and effectuating policies on regional level and in accordance with the principles of sustainable development and social coherence. Within this framework, the participation of the Region of Epirus in the approved ALTERENERGY project is considered to be vital since it deals with the burning issue of energy efficiency and sustainability.
